A Rising Tide
  • An estimated 500,000 Canadians have Alzheimer disease or other dementia.
  • Over 70,000 are under the age of 65 and approximately 50,000 are under the age of 60.
  • Women make up almost ¾ of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease
  • Within a generation the number of Canadians with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia will more than double.

 

How can the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories (ASANT) help?

When Alzheimer’s or other dementia’s touch your life, the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories is here to help. The Society can be a guide and support to persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and their care partners as they learn about  options and plan for the future.
ASANT has a number of educational programs designed to assist people in understanding the experience and impact of Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The Society provides presentations to community groups to create an informed and supportive community to enhance the quality of life for people living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

  • Helpline (Information and Referral) Toll free: 1-866-950-5465

     
  • Information Services/Resource Centres
    The Regional Offices and toll free Helpline provide information about Alzheimer’s and other dementias, emotional support to callers and referrals to community services.
  • Care Consultation
    Staff and volunteers assist people in navigating through the situations people with Alzheimer disease and their care partners face throughout the continuum of the disease. Service may be provided by telephone, e-mail or in person.
  • Information/ Support Groups
    Trained leaders facilitate discussion among group members who share experiences and offer support, practical suggests and encouragement to one another. Specialized groups for persons with memory impairment, adult children, male care partners, etc. may be available.
  • Family Learning Series
    The Family Learning Series covers each step of the Alzheimer journey. It provides families with information, the opportunity to practice skill development and access to resources.

 

  • Safely Home®
    Safely Home® is a nation- wide safe return program for individuals living with dementia at risk of getting lost. Registering yourself, or the person you support, with Safely Home® can give you the peace of mind to continue living as independently as possible, for as long as possible.

Maintain a healthy brain
- there are no guarantees, but healthy lifestyle choices will help keep your brain as healthy as possible as you age. And since a healthier brain can withstand illness better, it's important to take action on the things you can control -- lifestyle choices. Contact the Society for information on maintaining brain health or go to www.alzheimer.ca and click on “Brain Booster”.
